Short & clear

Certified Nepali translations by sworn, native-speaker translators.

Nepali is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, but it is a distinct Indo-Aryan language with its own vocabulary and grammar. Whether it is a citizenship certificate (नागरिकता) for an asylum or residence file, a school certificate for a study place, a care-worker's professional papers, or documentation for an English-language project: the work is done by native Nepali specialists with a proven field — into standard Nepali, never a Hindi approximation.

We work in both directions and both pairings. Nepali ⇄ German is what Austrian authorities and courts need — including certified translations, Bikram Sambat dates converted correctly and names matched exactly to the passport. Nepali ⇄ English covers international life in Austria: applications, diplomas, employer paperwork and documentation that circulate in English.

Who it's for

Living in Austria, thinking in more than one language.

Most people who search for this in English are already fluent Nepali speakers dealing with the Austrian system — asylum and residence, study, care-worker recruitment — or internationals who use English as the working language. Both are covered.

Nepali → German, for the authorities

Citizenship certificates (Nagarikta), birth and marriage records, school and degree certificates and police records for a registry office (Standesamt), the immigration office, the Federal Office for Migration or recognition of qualifications. Issued in Devanagari and dated in Bikram Sambat, they need a certified German translation with the date converted and the name matched to your passport.

Nepali ⇄ English, for international life

Job applications, employment contracts, references and diplomas that your employer, university or a partner abroad expects in English rather than German. Same specialists, same care with the script, the calendar and the terminology.

German → Nepali, for home

German certificates, contracts, powers of attorney and rulings that have to be presented to authorities, courts or family in Nepal — in standard Nepali, in the register and form expected there.

Care, trade and business

Care and skilled-worker recruitment between Germany and Nepal, or teams that run in English while the paperwork is German or Nepali. We assign a specialist for the direction and field you actually need, not a one-size-fits-all pair.

Language & script

Devanagari like Hindi, but its own language — and a date from another century.

Nepali is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, yet it is a separate Indo-Aryan language with its own vocabulary and grammar — for instance the verb ("is") — and several levels of politeness in address (तपाईं respectful, तिमी familiar, तँ intimate). The most consequential difference sits on almost every Nepali document: the date in the official Bikram Sambat calendar (BS), which runs roughly 56 to 57 years ahead of the Gregorian. Because the Nepali new year falls in mid-April, the gap shifts; the year 2082 BS corresponds to 2025/26. Copy a BS date unchecked and you misdate the document by half a century.

A further trap is the script itself: many older Nepali documents were typeset in the non-Unicode Preeti or Kantipur font, which turns into garbled characters when copied into standard software. For official use, an authorised translator issues a certified translation in clean Unicode Devanagari, with names matched to the passport and dates converted; whether an apostille or, in Nepal's case, legalisation is also needed is something we check in advance — it is issued by the competent authority, not by the translation agency.

Quality you only notice at the receiving end

What only a native Nepali specialist catches.

Nepali looks like Hindi and is often taken for it — and on the documents there is an extra trap: a calendar from another century. These pitfalls separate a native professional translation from one passed through. Each is specific to Nepali ⇄ German/English and demonstrable.

Typical pitfalls in Nepali translation and how a specialist resolves them
PitfallWhy it goes wrongHow the FÜD solves it
Bikram Sambat date copied 1:1Nepali documents are dated in Bikram Sambat, which runs about 56–57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar (2082 BS ≈ 2025/26). Copy the date unchecked and the document is off by half a century — with consequences for deadlines, age and validity.Every date is converted exactly between BS and Gregorian (allowing for the April new year) and, in case of doubt, shown twice (BS and Gregorian).
Nepali treated like HindiSame Devanagari script, but its own vocabulary and grammar (e.g. , "is"). A Hindi translator misses the Nepali official terminology and set phrases.Only native Nepali specialists translate — never a Hindi approximation.
Preeti / Kantipur legacy font falls apartMany Nepali documents were created in the non-Unicode Preeti (or Kantipur) font. Copied into standard software, it produces garbled characters instead of readable Devanagari — an unnoticed source of error. We work in correct Unicode Devanagari, recognise Preeti originals and transfer them faithfully instead of carrying the garble across.
Wrong level of politenessNepali distinguishes तपाईं (respectful), तिमी (familiar) and तँ (intimate/condescending). In letters and documents the wrong level reads as disrespectful or inappropriately familiar. The level of address is fixed by recipient and document type and held consistently throughout.
Gendered & honorific verb formsNepali verbs agree with gender and level of respect; a masculine form where a feminine one is required, in a statement or declaration, is a factual error, not a stylistic one.Native speakers carry gender and honorific agreement through and reconcile it with the personal data.
Name order & Thar / caste namesNepali names combine a given name, sometimes a middle name (e.g. Bahadur) and a Thar / family name; order and romanisation differ from the Western pattern. Assigned wrongly, the name no longer matches the passport.Name parts are assigned correctly as given / family name, explained, and matched to passport and Nagarikta.
Nepali institutions "translated" awayNagarikta (citizenship certificate), Ward Office, Loksewa Aayog or VDC/Palika have no German equivalent. An invented counterpart distorts what the document actually is.Institutions and document types are kept in the original with an explanatory equivalent, rather than replaced by a foreign body.

Why a wrong date here tips everything over

The most dangerous error on a Nepali document is not a grammar slip but the Bikram Sambat date carried over unchecked — half a century of divergence that decides deadlines, age and validity. Add Preeti garble and the confusion with Hindi, and none of it is caught by a spell-check; it surfaces only at the receiving end — the registry office, the Federal Office, the recognition body. That is exactly where native professional translation earns its place.

A date in Bikram Sambat sits about 57 years away from ours.

So: native Nepali specialists, dates converted exactly, and clean Unicode Devanagari instead of Preeti garble.

Certification & recognition

Certified, and why Nepal needs legalisation rather than an apostille.

For submission to Austrian authorities and courts, a court-authorised translator (in German, gerichtlich beeideter und zertifizierter Übersetzer, authorised under § 14 SDG) produces a certified translation with stamp, signature and certification note — recognised nationwide and revised in a four-eyes check under DIN EN ISO 17100.

The point that matters for Nepal: it is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. An apostille is therefore not enough — instead, legalisation via the competent authorities and the diplomatic mission is usually required. Which steps are needed, and in which order, we clarify in advance; these confirmations are issued by the competent authorities, not by the translation agency. We deliver the recognition-ready translation.

Use cases

Nepali to German translation: three typical cases from practice.

Purpose, procedure and authority decide the register, the handling of the date and the form of certification. Three common jobs — from the starting point to the result.

Asylum & residence

Nagarikta & civil records Nepali → German

Starting point
For an asylum or residence procedure, Nepali documents — a citizenship certificate (Nagarikta) and birth record — must be submitted to the Federal Office or the immigration authority, issued in Devanagari and dated in Bikram Sambat.
Process
An authorised translator renders the documents from Nepali, converts the Bikram Sambat dates correctly and matches names to the passport; the certification note makes them ready for the authority.
Result
Certified translations with the correct date that the authority can process without a follow-up query.

Study in English

Diploma & transcripts Nepali → English

Starting point
For admission or recognition, a professional or student from Nepal needs certified translations of school and degree certificates — sometimes from Preeti originals — for a programme that works in English.
Process
A specialist renders the certificates from clean Unicode Devanagari, keeps grades and titles in the original with an explanatory equivalent, and converts the issue dates.
Result
Documents an English-speaking university or recognition body accepts without a further request.

Care & profession

Professional papers German ↔ Nepali

Starting point
As part of skilled-worker and care recruitment, professional and civil-status documents are needed, certified, between Nepali and German.
Process
A Nepali specialist renders the documents, settles the right level of politeness and field terminology, and shows dates in both BS and Gregorian.
Result
Certified papers that pass smoothly through the recognition and visa procedure.

FAQ

Nepali translation – frequently asked questions.

Do you translate both Nepali to German and Nepali to English?

Yes. Nepali ⇄ German is the usual pairing for Austrian authorities, courts and asylum, study and care-worker procedures; Nepali ⇄ English covers international contexts – applications, diplomas and documentation exchanged in English. A native-speaker specialist is assigned to each direction.

Is Nepali the same as Hindi?

No. Nepali shares the Devanagari script with Hindi but is a distinct Indo-Aryan language with its own vocabulary and grammar (for example the verb छ, "is"). We never use a Hindi translator as a substitute; we translate exclusively into standard Nepali.

How do you handle the Bikram Sambat date on Nepali documents?

Nepali documents are usually dated in Bikram Sambat, which runs about 56 to 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar (2082 BS ≈ 2025/26). We convert every date correctly – allowing for the mid-April Nepali new year – and, where there is any doubt, show it twice, so no deadline or age is thrown off.

Can you provide a certified Nepali translation recognised in Austria?

Yes. For certificates, diplomas and official documents an authorised translator (gerichtlich beeideter und zertifizierter Übersetzer, authorised by an Austrian court under § 14 SDG) issues a certified translation with a certification note, recognised by Austrian authorities and courts nationwide.

Does a Nepali document need an apostille?

No – Nepal is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Instead of an apostille, legalisation via the competent authorities and the diplomatic mission is usually required. We clarify the steps in advance; they are issued by the competent authority, not by the FÜD.

What does a Nepali translation cost?

The price depends on volume, field, direction and deadline. After a brief review we name a binding fixed price; standard certificates are usually a flat fee per document, from € 1.09 per standard line.
The date on our Nepali documents was in Bikram Sambat — here it was converted correctly and shown twice. At the Federal Office there was not a single query about age or deadlines.

Work with us

Already a native Nepali speaker? Become an authorised translator.

Our Nepali translations are produced by native-speaker specialists — the reason Austrian authorities, universities and courts accept them without queries. Beyond the language itself, that rests on German at C2 level, a specialist field the translator can defend, and — for certified work — court authorisation under § 14 SDG. If you bring that combination rather than bilingualism alone, we work with Nepali translators employed and freelance, and the way in is also open through an internship.

The path

German to C2, plus a field

Native Nepali is your starting capital; the market rewards what you build on top. German at C2 — the level at which you read a German ruling or medical report without hesitation — is the real gate, because certified work means rendering official German with precision, not just understanding it. Add a field you can defend (law, medicine, technology, finance) and the terminology that comes with it. That combination, not language alone, is what a registry office or the Federal Office actually relies on.

Why it holds up

Authorisation, and the expertise behind it

For certified translations you apply to the competent Regional Court (Landesgericht) to be authorised under § 14 SDG. And Nepali is exacting, specialist work: an Indo-Aryan language in Devanagari that systems routinely confuse with Hindi, rarely seen outside specialist hands, with a Bikram Sambat calendar and passport-exact name transfer that have to be right the first time. Careful human work here is not nostalgia — it is what the receiving authority requires.
